The AF-S Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E ED – Not Just For Portraits

March 4, 2020 By David Whitham

The AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is not my most-used lens, but it is easily my favorite lens.  It is the first lens I pull out for portraiture, and it is an amazing low light lens for sports like basketball. This week, I shot some portraiture on Sunday, and basketball on Monday.  Two completely different subjects, same lens.

Sunday, I had the good fortune of meeting Iliana.  This is a simple set up with a Godox AD200 in a 36″ Octa for key and another AD200 set in a gridded strip box to add a little highlight on her hair.  Photographed using the Nikon D850:

Basketball on Monday, this time with a Nikon D5 – With the low gym lights, I shot at f/2 with a 1/1000 exposure at 6400 ISO.

Jonathan Law’s Maddie Lula scored 13 points as the Lady Lawmen defeated Amistad High School, 51-49, in the first round of the CIAC Class MM girls state basketball tournament Monday night.
