Max

May 21, 2025 By David Whitham

This has always been my favorite image I took of Max. This was approximately 6 months after he rescued us, and to me it showed just how far he came from being the scared, severely underweight boy we brought home, to the best friend who saved me.

His story with us started on February 1, 2014, when I got a text from Lisa that said, “Please keep an open mind, I think we found a dog.” The New Haven Animal Shelter was having an adoption event at our local Petco, and Max was there. I took one look at him, with his big eyes, and to Lisa’s and Ashley’s surprise, I said, “Lets sign the papers.”

Three days later, I got laid off from my job, and, on the same day, my mom and I had to put my dad into hospice care, where he passed away a week and a half later.

In two weeks, I had lost my dad, my job, and got Max. When I say that he rescued us, he got us through the hardest time in my life.

It has been said that God sent dogs without wings so no one would suspect that they were angels. No truer words have been said, because Max was definitely Heaven sent.

Our boy crossed the rainbow bridge today, and while we know he is no longer in pain, we are all deeply devastated and heartbroken by this loss.
