Minor League Baseball

May 15, 2010 By David Whitham

Armando BenitezBOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Ok, I got that out of the way – Seeing Armando Benitez (right) warming up in the bullpen just causes a knee-jerk reaction in Mets fans, I guess….

I went to see the Bridgeport Bluefish play the Newark Bears in Bridgeport the other night – My daughter’s school had a reading achievement night at the game, and my daughter was one of the students recognized.

The crowd was disappointing to say the least – I estimated that maybe 300 fans were there – independent league baseball is a tougher sell than minor league baseball that is affiliated with Major League teams – most of the players are either past their prime – former major leaguers Scott Spiezio, Fernando Seguignol, and Jorge Julio all played – or players not good enough to be drafted into MLB farm systems.

It was a fun time at the ballpark, though, with the usual minor league destractions between innings, and the games was a tightly played 2-1 game with Julio (below) getting the save for the Bluefish.
