Playing With Focus Modes on the Nikon D5 and the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4E

February 19, 2020 By David Whitham

Sometimes, I let myself get into a rut.  What I mean, is that I just use the same settings, and just shoot and go.  Last week, I didn’t have an assignment, so I shot the Jonathan Law vs. Shelton High girls basketball game using just the 105mm f/1.4e on my D5, and instead of just using the D9 focus grouping like I usually do in basketball, I set the focus to 3D tracking.  I also shot at f/2 which gave me a narrower depth of field than usual (I usually shoot at f/2.8 on my 70-200).

Think 105 is one of my favorite lenses.  It’s sharp, has brilliant bokeh, especially wide open, but I generally use this lens for portraiture.  I think I’ll have to use 3D tracking more often, because it worked really well:
